Training Recommendations
Training (and implementation) will center on creating a cohesive, patient-centered, interdisciplinary team that fully understands oral history and its ability to help us understand our patients. To appreciate the effectiveness of oral history, it is imperative that key members of the interdisciplinary team experience it themselves.
Health Coaches
- Health coaches will attend oral history training provided by Talking Across the Lines: Worldwide Conversations, LLC. Oral history will supplement current practices primarily on initial visits with patients. Health coaches may also use oral history for patients with established relationships when professional judgment deems appropriate by a health coach or provider.
- Health coaches will use oral history to counsel their patients and submit a paraphrased version to providers when appropriate. They will utilize SBAR to structure this communication.
Health Care Providers
- Providers should experience the power of oral history and SBAR to interpret effectively their patient’s experience and the information gathered. Therefore, it is recommended that providers attend the training alongside the health coaches. This will also facilitate communication and understanding of roles between the health coaches and providers.
- Providers will maintain consistent communication with health coaches regarding their patients' healthcare needs.
